The Society for Special Persons is an organization that was established in 2009 in the city of Multan. Madam Zahida Hameed Qureshi is the co-founder and chairperson. She was affected by polio at an early age. Her dreams come true, and she did a masters in the subject of economics. Rather, she also topped from Bahauddin Zakariya University. She thinks that everyone has the facilities that should also be given to disabled people, like education, work, and affectionate behavior. The mission of this organization is to produce a more comprehensive society where disabled people are respected, valued, and fully involved. The organization played an essential role in the life of a disabled person regarding mobility. A boundless appreciation has been considered regarding the customized wheelchairs.
At present, wheelchairs are manufactured for patients with polio, spinal cord injury, CBP, or complete body paralysis as per weight, age, and need. The beauty of this manufacturing is that the workers are also disabled. This is the only manufacturing setup in Pakistan where customized wheelchairs are manufactured and technical training has also been given to almost 250 disabled persons till now.
Persons with disabilities contact the organization for free customized wheelchairs. After completing the procedures of registration and assessments, a manufactured customized wheelchair is given to him/her with the training on how to use it. It means that all wheelchairs are delivered free of cost to disabled/needy people.
They have the full support of the Government of Pakistan. Pakistan Bait-ul-Mall launched a complete program on customized wheelchairs. An idea to make ramps in banks, schools, and shopping malls in Pakistan is provided by this organization. Madam Zahida received a Presidential Award, the Fatima Jinnah Award from the Government of Punjab, an Award from Planning and Reforms, and also represented Pakistan in 11 countries of the world. Represented Pakistan twice in the office of the United Nations Organization (UNO). She is a Technical Advisor and focal person to the Punjab Government.
Madam Zahida Hameed Qureshi is not disabled, rather we are disabled people. She teaches people to walk, and we locked them. We learned that the first step is the key to success.
